Published on

In recent years, the National Football League (NFL) has become increasingly popular outside of the United States. The NFL, America's most popular sports league, which has long been considered a staple of American culture, has managed to transcend borders and reach a global audience. This growing popularity can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the globalization of media, the league's efforts to expand its international reach, and the growing interest in American football as a sport.

In this article, we will explore the reasons for the NFL's success outside of the US and take a closer look at the league's efforts to promote the sport in other countries and the impact it has had on the global fan base.

Expanding to international locations

One of the most important factors in the NFL's success outside the US is the organisation of regular season games at international locations. The NFL has been holding regular season games in London since 2007. In recent years, games have also been held regularly in Mexico and Canada, and in 2025 they took place in Ireland and Spain for the first time. The NFL’s German debut took place in Munich in 2022, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks played the first NFL regular season game in Germany. Since then, regular season games have been held in Germany every year. In 2023, two games followed in Frankfurt am Main, where all records were broken once again with over 100,000 fans in attendance. Following another match in Munich in 2024 between the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers, the first NFL Germany Game in Berlin was added in 2025. Once again the German fanbase showed its enormous enthusiasm: at one point, up to 500,000 fans were queuing simultaneously during the ticket pre-sale. Annual regular season games in Germany are scheduled until at least 2029, and from 2026 the league is set to expand into other European countries.

Utilizing digital media to attract interest

Another reason for the NFL's success outside the US is the increased access to the league's games and content through global media. The rise of streaming services and the internet have made it easier for fans around the world to watch games live. In 2022, American football had become the second most popular sport on German free TV. From 2012 to 2023, ProSieben held the free-TV broadcasting rights to the NFL in Germany. The particularly relaxed and entertaining coverage made the sport accessible to a wide audience and contributed significantly to the growth of the NFL fanbase in Germany. Since the 2023/24 season, the TV rights have been transferred to the RTL Group, and since 2023, DAZN has also been offering the NFL Game Pass alongside selected NFL games via streaming, providing access to all live and re-live matches. A strong social media presence with up to six figures followers keeps fans around the world up to date with the latest news and analysis, and the NFL’s multilingual website also offers comprehensive coverage of games and events.

Brand-building through Attendance

The NFL has also been actively working to expand its presence in China in recent years. This includes a multi-year Enthusiasm for American football is not fuelled solely by live matches and TV broadcasts. Through the Global Markets Programme (GMP), eleven NFL teams have now acquired marketing rights for Germany. The teams use these rights to expand their presence and fanbase in the country through regular engagement activities and strategic partnerships, making the sport more accessible. Furthermore, the official NFL Flag programme launched in Germany in 2022. At over 350 schools, the NFL is introducing younger audiences to the non-contact version of the sport.

Conclusion

The NFL’s success outside the US can be attributed to a combination of many factors, including hosting games at international venues, using digital media to reach a global audience, team engagement and activations in target markets, and the development of youth programmes in other countries.

Furthermore, the NFL has managed to captivate the masses and make the sport accessible through its unique fan culture.
