For the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, Volkswagen transformed the launch of the ID. Polo into a nationwide storytelling campaign combining football, humour, influencer marketing, media exposure and fan experiences.
In this Success Story:
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ approached, Volkswagen faced a unique challenge: launching the ID. Polo, the first model in the ID. electric range to revive the iconic name of one of the brand’s most historic vehicles.
To meet this challenge, SPORTFIVE created “Polo, the New Kid,” a 360° campaign that transformed the ID. Polo into the French national team’s 27th player. Combining film, social media, influencer marketing, events and dealership activations, the campaign successfully embedded the ID. Polo in World Cup conversations and built lasting awareness around the new model.
Volkswagen was preparing to launch the ID. Polo, a strategic model for the brand. For the first time within its electric vehicle range, Volkswagen chose to revive the iconic “Polo” name instead of following the conventional naming structure used across the ID. lineup. The challenge was therefore both product and marketing driven: to build awareness and recognition of this new name well before the vehicle’s market launch.
But in an environment where media attention is entirely focused on players, squad selections and France national team matches, how do you make a car part of the conversation among football fans? Volkswagen needed to find a way to naturally integrate itself into the football narrative while steering clear of traditional automotive advertising codes. The ambition was clear: to make the ID. Polo a talking point throughout the tournament in its own right.
The Winning Activation
To address this challenge, SPORTFIVE chose not to position the ID. Polo as a vehicle, but as a character.
The idea stemmed from a simple insight: in France, “Polo” is also a common nickname for people named Paul. This cultural connection inspired the campaign’s creative concept: turning the ID. Polo into the French national team’s 27th player.
Named “Polo, the New Kid” the campaign was designed like a true sporting season. For more than two months, fans were able to follow the arrival, integration and adventures of this new squad member through a 360° activation deployed before, during and after the FIFA World Cup.
The campaign kicked off with a film released alongside Didier Deschamps’ squad announcement, allowing Volkswagen to tap directly into one of the most anticipated moments for French football fans. In the film, the ID. Polo was introduced as the French national team’s newest recruit.
The storyline was then expanded through a comprehensive ecosystem combining social media, influencer marketing, press relations, partner media and owned content. Each activation advanced the story of the “new kid on the block,” strengthening its connection with fans and reinforcing its place in the conversation throughout the tournament.
To bring the story to life, SPORTFIVE created the Polo Fan Club, an engagement platform inviting fans to join Polo’s community, take part in interactive challenges and enter for a chance to win exclusive prizes, including the future ID. Polo.
The campaign also came to life in the real world through the “Polo Stand” which brought together supporters wearing “Polo” jerseys at France national team warm-up matches, and through the “Polo Comedy Club” a unique event blending football, comedy and influencer culture to firmly embed the campaign within popular culture.
Finally, through the activation of the French Football Federation (FFF), partner media outlets and Volkswagen’s own network, the campaign came to life across every brand touchpoint: media, CRM, dealerships, influencer channels, events and social platforms. More than a product launch, Volkswagen created a collective story that turned the ID. Polo into a genuine topic of conversation throughout the FIFA World Cup.
Results That Matched the Ambition
By turning the ID. Polo into a genuine member of the French national team, Volkswagen successfully moved beyond a traditional product launch to create a campaign driven by conversation and participation. For more than two months, the campaign was activated across every brand touchpoint, including social media, influencer marketing, press relations, partner media, CRM, events and dealerships.
The campaign notably recruited 4,471 members to the Polo Fan Club, generating more than 72,000 visits to the platform. It also engaged over 330 Volkswagen dealerships, activated multiple content creators, brought together nearly 100 supporters in the Polo Stand, welcomed 500 guests to the Polo Comedy Club for the France vs. Norway match screening, and firmly established the Polo character in conversations surrounding the FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the performance metrics, the campaign demonstrated how an automotive launch can become a true cultural phenomenon when built around a consistent storytelling platform and deployed through a fully integrated 360° activation strategy.
